Start with comparable offers
Use the same requested amount and the same kind of product when possible. Record each offer’s APR, interest rate, fees, term, payment schedule, late-payment terms, and total amount paid.
Understand APR and fees
The CFPB describes APR as the interest rate plus certain additional fees, expressed as a percentage. It can support comparison, but it does not replace reading the full disclosure. Personal installment loans may include origination, documentation, optional insurance, and late fees.
Check the term and total cost
A longer term may reduce each payment while increasing the interest paid over time. Confirm the number of payments, due dates, whether the rate can change, and any prepayment or late-payment terms.
Before accepting
- Read the lender’s written disclosures.
- Compare multiple offers without mixing APR with interest rate.
- Ask about every fee and whether it is optional.
- Confirm the payment fits your budget beyond the first month.
- Keep copies of the terms you accepted.
