Review identity and account information
The CFPB recommends checking for identity errors, accounts that are not yours, duplicate debts, incorrect balances or limits, and incorrect account status or payment dates.
Keep supporting records
Save the report, statements, contracts, payment records, and correspondence that support your position. Send copies rather than original documents.
Dispute with both companies
CFPB guidance says fixing an error generally means contacting the credit reporting company and the company that furnished the information. Explain what is wrong, why it is wrong, and what correction you request.
Identity theft needs a separate response
If an error may result from identity theft, use IdentityTheft.gov for a recovery plan. Do not upload sensitive documents to FoxyFinance; this site does not process disputes.
