A hard inquiry is a lender pulling your file for a decision. Several hards for the same product type, close together, are often collapsed by the model into one shopping event. The length of that window is a model rule, not a law, and it is not the same for a credit card as for a mortgage. Mixing product types inside the window is how people accidentally stack unrelated hards.
Soft versus hard, in practice
A soft pull (prequalification, your own score check, some employer screens) does not score like a hard pull. A hard pull can. The partner page must say which one it will do before you submit. If the button is labeled see my rate and the fine print says a hard inquiry, that is a hard. Screenshot the sentence.
On 12 September 2026 this desk spent 16 min reading partner prequal copy on a U.S. path. Soft-prequal language appeared on some personal-loan landings; others jumped to a full application. We did not submit either. We did not measure a score change because we did not pull the file.
What the window is not
It is not a promise that five lenders will price you the same. It is not a lock. It is a scoring-model grouping of inquiries. Typical published ranges you will see cited are on the order of 14 days in older FICO versions and up to 45 days in some newer FICO and VantageScore treatments for mortgages and auto. Personal-loan and card shopping are not always grouped with mortgage shopping. Do not assume a 45-day auto window covers a personal-loan hard you did last week.
Write dates. If you hard-pulled a card on day 0 and a personal loan on day 3, you may have two events. If you hard-pulled three personal-loan applications on day 0, day 2, and day 5, some models treat that as one shopping cluster. The only way to know which model your lender buys is to ask, in writing, which score and which bureau.
SSN versus ITIN
The window does not change because the identifier is an ITIN. Thin files have fewer tradelines, so a single hard is a larger share of the file. That is a file-thickness issue, not a different shopping statute. Eligibility still sits with the creditor.
How we shop without stacking
- Pull your own three-bureau reports first (AnnualCreditReport.com). Fix errors before anyone else pulls.
- Use soft prequal where the landing page actually says soft.
- Cluster remaining hards for one product type inside a few days, not across six weeks.
- Do not mix mortgage, auto, card, and personal-loan hards and call it one window.
- Stop when you have a written TILA box, not when you have a fifth prequal email.
Cons / limitations
- Window length is model-specific; this site does not set it.
- Soft-prequal copy can still be followed by a hard on the full application.
- A shopping cluster does not freeze the APR you were shown on day one.
- ITIN and thin-file borrowers still take a visible hit from extra unrelated hards.

A dated shopping log you can copy
Column A: date and time. Column B: creditor legal name. Column C: product type (personal loan, card, auto, mortgage). Column D: the page said soft or hard. Column E: whether you submitted. Column F: confirmation number. If two rows share a product type and sit inside a handful of days, you are inside a possible cluster. If they do not share a product type, do not tell yourself they will collapse. Keep the log for 60 days. Some lenders re-pull before funding; that second pull should be expected, not a surprise.
If a marketplace shows five lenders after one soft form, that can be one soft to the marketplace and still a hard later at each lender you click through. Read the second page, not only the first. This desk did not click through to funding, so we cannot timestamp a second-pull clause on a named creditor today.
When you are ready for live installment terms — still not an approval — use personal-loan listings. Confirm whether the next click is a soft estimate or a full application.
Cards versus installment windows
Card shopping is often treated more harshly than mortgage shopping in older FICO versions: each card hard can stand alone. That is why applying for three cards this month while shopping a personal loan is two projects. Do the loan cluster in one week. Do cards later, or not at all if leftover already fails. Auto and mortgage windows, when they exist, are not a blanket for personal-loan hards. If a lender will not name the score and bureau in writing, assume the least friendly grouping.
