Affiliate disclosure: One first-party hop may appear. It is a consumer personal-loan listing, not an SBA window.
Using a personal installment to fund inventory, payroll, or equipment mixes household credit with the entity. If the business is an LLC or corporation, that mix is how plaintiffs and tax auditors argue the veil was never real. If you are a sole proprietor, there is no veil to pierce — the personal loan is just another household note, and the interest may or may not be deductible. This page separates those cases. Desk time 12 September 2026: 17 min. We did not file an SBA application.
Three stacks, three disclosures
Personal installment: TILA box, consumer underwriting, household DTI, often a 2–7 year term. Default hits the personal file.
SBA 7(a) working capital: government-backed commercial paper. Underwriting wants business tax returns, use of proceeds, and often a personal guaranty anyway. Time-to-fund is measured in weeks, not hours. Fees and guarantee percentages are on the SBA and lender term sheet, not on a consumer Schumer box.
Merchant cash advance: not a loan in the marketing copy. You sell future receipts at a factor rate. A factor of 1.3 on $50,000 is $65,000 to repay. Converted to an APR-like number that can print well above 50% if the holdback is daily. UCC-1 filings can sit in front of later lenders.
When the personal note is the wrong tool
If you need more than the consumer unsecured cap (often $30,000–$50,000 on marketplace paper, labeled here as a range not a quote), a personal note will not close the gap. If you need the interest treated as a business expense, the CPA will ask whether the proceeds went into the entity and whether the entity is the borrower. If you need to keep a judgment away from the house, a personal guaranty on a commercial facility is already a hole in that plan — but a personal loan is a bigger hole because the household is the primary borrower.
When the personal note is the honest tool
Sole proprietor, small cash gap, 12–36 month clear, and you will not represent the funds as a commercial facility. Write that down. Do not tell a later SBA lender that the personal loan was business working capital if the note is in your name only. Inconsistency is how applications stall.
Cons / limitations
- Personal default is a household credit event even if the money bought shop equipment.
- SBA 7(a) is slow and still often wants a personal guaranty.
- MCA factor rates are easy to understate if you only quote the factor and not the holdback calendar.
- Use the business-financing comparison for a business purpose and a personal-loan comparison only for a permitted consumer purpose. Neither route confirms SBA eligibility.
UCC-1 and daily sweep, in plain numbers
An MCA that holds back 15% of daily card receipts on a $50,000 advance at a 1.3 factor does not wait for a monthly draft. If the shop takes $2,000 a day in cards, $300 leaves every day. That is $9,000 a month against a $65,000 purchase of receipts. The calendar to clear depends on volume. A slow week extends the effective cost. A personal installment at a labeled 13.99% APR on $10,000 with a $341.73 draft is a household event and will not sweep the merchant account. Mixing them in the same week is how bookkeepers lose the thread.
SBA 7(a) packaging wants tax returns, a use-of-proceeds statement, and often months. If payroll is due Friday, SBA is the wrong clock. If payroll is due Friday and the MCA factor prints like 80% APR when annualized, the remaining honest options are a delayed vendor, a smaller personal note you can leftover-test, or not paying yourself. There is no Hub hop on this site that makes an MCA cheap.
If the honest borrower is still the household, compare consumer installment terms via . For SBA or MCA paper, use the lender commercial application, not this hop.
Personal guaranty is not a veil
Signing a personal guaranty on an SBA or bank commercial note means the household is still on the hook. The entity may be the borrower, but the guaranty is a second door into the same house. A personal installment skips the entity entirely. If the goal is to keep a judgment off the house, neither path is clean. Talk to counsel before mixing payroll and a consumer note. This desk is not counsel. The 17 min read was of public SBA and MCA mechanics, not of your operating agreement.
