Consumer credit disclosures describe cost fields including APR and finance charge. A credit-card Schumer box and an installment-loan Truth in Lending disclosure are not identical forms. Use the correct disclosure for the product you are comparing; the worksheet does not determine legal compliance.
For an illustration, a $5,000 loan with an 8% fee deducted from the proceeds provides $4,600 before any other deductions. The scheduled balance can still be $5,000. This is not a finding from an audit of lender contracts, a current provider fee, or a quoted APR. Ask for the amount financed, finance charge, APR, payment schedule and total of payments in the creditor’s own written disclosure.
Because unexpected deductions leave borrowers short on required cash funds, computing true borrowing expenses before executing promissory notes is essential. Use this interactive Schumer Box Decoder to calculate net disbursed funds, total finance charges, and true effective APRs.

The Four Mandatory Pillars of a TILA Disclosure
Under 12 C.F.R. § 1026.18, every consumer credit agreement must present four core numeric disclosures prominently isolated from general contractual text:
Detecting Unlawful Fee Masking and TILA Violations
While federal statutes require strict accuracy in Truth in Lending disclosures, aggressive subprime lenders employ sophisticated contractual techniques to minimize stated APRs while charging predatory finance fees:
- Disguised Document Preparation Charges: Under 12 C.F.R. § 1026.4(a), fees that must be paid as an incident to the extension of credit constitute finance charges. Lenders that classify mandatory internal processing fees as ‘exempt administrative costs’ commit actionable disclosure violations.
- Precomputed Interest Acceleration: In standard simple interest contracts, repaying loans early eliminates remaining interest obligations. In predatory Rule of 78s contracts, interest is heavily front-loaded, penalizing borrowers who refinance within the first 12 months.
- Ancillary Credit Insurance Packing: Dealerships and installment lenders routinely check voluntary boxes for Credit Life and Credit Disability insurance without affirmative consumer consent, inflating overall finance charges under 12 C.F.R. § 1026.4(d).
Steps to Take When Discrepancies Emerge
If your final promissory note lists an APR or finance charge that deviates from the initial Loan Estimate by more than one-eighth of one percentage point (0.125%), follow this formal statutory response:
- Issue Written Demand for Recalculation: Notify the lending compliance officer immediately via certified mail citing 12 C.F.R. § 1026.18, requiring corrected disclosure statements prior to the expiration of your statutory rescission window.
Use the official CFPB complaint process and keep the confirmation and provider response. Response times and next steps depend on the complaint process; submitting a complaint does not guarantee a resolution.
For a dispute over a disclosure, retain the agreement, advertisement and payment record. Seek qualified legal help or a consumer assistance organization. This worksheet does not determine a violation, available remedy, filing deadline or amount of damages.
Truth in Lending Notice: This calculator provides mathematical estimates based on federal Regulation Z disclosure principles. Lenders are legally required to provide official Truth in Lending Act disclosures prior to loan signing. FoxyFinance does not originate credit products.

Use the worksheet to organize disclosure fields, not to infer eligibility. A finance charge can include charges beyond interest, and the timing of payments can affect APR. Do not enter a fee-inclusive APR as though it were the contract interest rate and then add the same fee again. If figures disagree, ask the creditor to explain its actual amount financed, payment schedule and charge treatment.
For example, a 5% fee deducted from a $2,000 loan leaves $1,900 to spend. A $2,000 bill is not fully covered by those proceeds. Identify that gap before accepting the agreement. A result from this tool does not mean Round Sky or any lender offered the entered terms, accepted the identification documents or approved the amount.
