Why W-2 underwriting fails gig workers
A W-2 is a stable payroll number. Uber, DoorDash, Substack, and a single-member LLC do not produce that number. Stated-income and bank-statement programs look at deposits instead. They are not ‘no doc’. They are a different document set.
If your deposits bounce between three personal accounts and a Cash App, the underwriter will not reconstruct your life. Use one operating account for 90 days before you apply. That is the highest-leverage step on this page.
What the statement file must show
Three months is the floor. Six months wins when revenue is lumpy. PDF statements from the bank, not screenshots, not CSV exports you typed. Name on the account must match the application. Joint accounts need both parties or a lender that accepts them.
- Kill NSF events. Three NSF codes in 90 days is a common auto-decline.
- Export official PDFs. Do not annotate them in a way that looks like an edit.
- List monthly obligations honestly. Statement underwriting still ratios debt to the haircut income.
- Apply through a marketplace that names bank-statement or stated-income programs, not a payday form.
Auto and personal-loan variants
Gig drivers often need a vehicle loan, not a vacation loan. The same statement pack can support auto refinance if the lender’s overlay allows it. Subprime auto is a different APR band; use the 22% vs 12% worksheet on the FoxyFinance calculators page before you celebrate a lower payment.
Personal bank-statement loans still print a TILA box. Compare APR and origination fee. Do not compare ‘we use your deposits’ marketing to a W-2 lender’s 11% APR. Different file, different price.
The live hop
SuperMoney personal loans (offer 1618) is bound on this site. It is a comparison marketplace; we have not confirmed a particular bank-statement lender or acceptance of your documents. Eligibility is the provider’s. FoxyFinance does not see your PDFs.
If the marketplace returns only payday creatives, leave. This guide is for installment underwriting on deposits, not a two-week debit.
Pros
- No W-2 on the two live flows we opened.
- Haircut range is explicit, so you can pre-compute usable income.
- 90-day single-account cleanup is a free underwriting upgrade.
Cons
- Lumpy months get capped; the $8,000 peak may not count.
- NSF history can decline you even with strong gross deposits.
- Marketplace mix varies by state and by day.
One first-party hop: for 1099 / bank-statement installment programs. Advertising, not a W-2 waiver from a named bank.
Can I mix Venmo and a bank PDF?
Usually no. The lender wants one bank’s official statement.
Do I still file taxes?
Yes. Statement underwriting is for the loan file, not the IRS.
What about a micro-LLC?
Use the business-line guide if the capital is for the company.
Ninety days of clean deposits in one account is worth more than a clever cover letter. Underwriters read the PDF, not the story.
This page is independent editorial research. It is not legal, medical, or financial advice. Partner hops, when present, use first-party /go/ routes with rel="sponsored nofollow" and are advertising, not an approval or a guarantee.
How to read the table
Every number on this page is tied to the 15 September 2026 check window. If a vendor changes a form, a fee, or a firmware build after that date, treat the table as a snapshot, not a live API. Re-run the same steps on your own file before you spend money. We would rather publish a dated clock than a timeless adjective.
Where a commercial hop is missing, that is fail-closed policy, not an unfinished sentence. A button that 404s is worse than no button. Official government or vendor privacy forms are cited as steps, not as affiliate inventory.
Make the 90-day deposit file on purpose
Advertising. Not a W-2. Not a loan.
Optional product comparison
Open a personal loan request through Round Sky Compare personal loan options through SuperMoneyConfirm the lender’s actual document list
Before applying, ask whether your income sources are accepted and whether the loan permits your intended use. A business owner buying equipment needs a different comparison from a driver covering a household medical bill. Make that distinction before selecting a form. Do not assume that a personal account deposit makes a business expense eligible for consumer credit.
Create a simple reconciliation: for each month, list genuine customer receipts, business expenses, taxes reserved and household cash available. Keep the statements that support the figures. If a platform pays after deducting its fees, avoid subtracting those fees twice. Explain refunds and transfers rather than inflating income. A creditor may request more records despite an initial bank connection.
For a hypothetical fee-free $3,000 loan at 24% fixed annual interest over 24 monthly payments, the payment is about $158.61 and total repayment about $3,806.72. A deducted 5% origination fee leaves $2,850 in cash. Use the lender’s actual APR and disclosures for comparison; this example is not a quote or a prediction that bank statements qualify.
